Affiliate Marketing

An online business can seem to be a complex and overwhelming process especially for people who have never done it before, newbies. This article is a simple and free affiliate marketing guide for beginners presented in 3 steps. The objective is to show a simplified approach to key elements that must be looked at when building an online affiliate marketing business. There are so many elements involved in affiliate marketing and knowing the terminology used is also fundamental. An elephant is eaten one piece at a time. Try to eat the whole thing at the same time or once would certainly be impossible. Similarly, with affiliate marketing, many people give up because the whole process look very impossible or difficult. Here are the 3 key pillars of affiliate marketing: website, affiliate program, and marketing.

1. Website

A website is simply defined as a set of web pages on a single domain name. The number of web pages on the website can be one, two, three, or more within a single domain. A domain can be thought of as the web or online space, address, or territory that is privately owned with a unique web address characterized by a specific suffix depending on the country or type of organization. The website would normally have content and this may be text, pictures, video clips, or web links pointing to other pages or another website. It can be developed or build from the ‘blank page’ or ‘preferred template’. There are many website building software tools online. Some are free and some paid for. You can shop around for these, check them, and chose the one that would suit your strategy. Putting all together, for a complete and active website these must be known, understood, and applied: website domain name, website host, and website builder. Most service providers would have one, two, or all three of these.

2. Affiliate Programme

An affiliate program is an arrangement where an online merchant or product owner pays an affiliate marketer a commission for successful traffic. The marketer would identify the program or platform, register as an affiliate, have a unique referral link generated, promote the link on his website, and drive traffic to the merchant’s website. Upon the successful action, most often would be a sale initiated or activated by the affiliate, referral fee or commission would then be paid to the affiliate marketer. There are many affiliate marketing programs or websites that people can join and start promoting them or drive traffic to them and start generating a one-off or continuous income. Select an affiliate program that resonates more with your interests, passion, skill, qualification, or hobby. There is a website, affiliate program chosen and next is the actual marketing of the product, service, or promotion of the link.

3. Marketing.

Marketing involves promoting and selling of products. This is a process that entails branding, pricing, publicity, public relations, social media, advertising, research, and other elements. In affiliate marketing, the unique link or merchant’s website can be promoted online or offline. There’s free marketing and paid marketing. Examples of offline marketing include newspaper adverts, flyers, pamphlets, business cards, posters, etc. Online marketing includes social media marketing, email marketing, influencer marketing, content marketing, paid marketing, content marketing, search engine optimizer (SEO), and of course affiliate marketing.

Social media marketing is typically advertising on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Email marketing is the process of collecting or building a list of emails and send marketing messages. Influencer marketing is making use of the people with a big following to get them to promote your products, service, website, or unique link. Content marketing involves the utilization of blogging, videos, webinars, books, etc. Paid marketing is when you pay for the advert placing on any advertising platform. Search engine optimizer (SEO) is setting or optimizing your website for top ranking on internet search engines to get traffic or visitors to the merchant’s website via own website. Affiliate marketing, as mentioned above, is a marketing arrangement by which an online retailer pays a commission to an external website for traffic or sales generated from its referrals.

Using this 3 -step guide will help beginners in putting together an online affiliate marketing business.

  1. It sounds simple enough – you set up an affiliate site, find a program, then use that site to market via the website and Social Media whatever product that you receive a commission for.   Simple enough – but is there someone or a program that would not cost a fortune to coach you through becoming an Affiliate Marketer?

    1. Thanks Steve for the comment. I’m still new in the programme and online business/affiliate marketing is one of my interests. There are many affiliate marketing educational programs on internet and they vary from free to paid courses that one can take. I’ve seen programs like skillpages, udemy, clickbank, amazon and many others. I will look at these later on but you can check them.
